The playlist features almost 2 hours of Charles Levine’s production and songwriting work. You are familiar with Charlie as 1/2 of the E-Funk (Electronic Funk) duo known as Soul Clap.

Chuck Da Fonk put together a special tribute mix for Charlie Levine on the latest FSQ radio show - it’s a 1 hour and 40 minute mix of all music written, sung, or produced by Charlie - either as Lonely C, Charlie Soul Clap, or simply as Soul Clap - starting about 40 minutes into this episode:

Chuck Da Fonk on the Charlie Soul Clap / Lonely C tribute mix and playlist:

“I really hope people dig into the songs that Charlie released as Lonely C. These are epic songwriting adventures, and really show off his affinity for the world of Parliament-Funkadelic. I think of the slow and sultry Lonely C tune “Hypnogogic Light” as an example of a tune that screams early Funkadelic ballad, but presented in a modern electronic context. On “Fuck Sorrow”, which is a tune by Soul Clap featuring Lonely C, Charlie presents himself as a George Clinton type vocalist circa 1982’s “Atomic Dog”. My favorite of all of these exemplary Lonely C songwriting works has to be “B.O.G.” which is again drips with P-Funk vibes with a strong hint of Ron Isley of the Isley Brothers.

Chuck continues: “The big hits for Lonely C come through his collaboration with Kendra Foster on “Ain’t Worried” and “Hold Up”. I love Charlie’s synthesizer style - I recognize it instantly - it reminds me very much of P-Funk keyboard wizard Bernie Worrell. Charlie also echoes Wally Badarou on his Caribbean flavored and Sly & Robbie inspired cuts with Tom Trago, known as “The Compass Joint”.

Beyond Charlie’s original songs presented as Lonely C, the Charlie Soul Clap remix productions are high octane, fast moving and BPM rich affairs. He moved our tune “Peel Back” into breakbeat territory and it’s one for the steppers with the tempo moving beyond 130 bpm. You can hear this same swift energy on the Charlie Soul Clap tune “Virgo’s Victory” or through his remix versions for his own Soul Clap mothership. Please enjoy the mix and the playlist.
