Celebrating G Koop

Without Rob “G Koop” Mandell, there’s no FSQ. In this post, we would like to celebrate G Koop, our favorite multi instrumentalist and producer. If you’re not familiar with G Koop, check out this bio from Pulse Music Group.

Spotify has a songwriter page set up for G Koop highlighting his songwriting contributions.

The Spotify G Koop songwriter page also takes you to a “Written By G Koop” playlist. We aren’t sure how it’s organized, but it looks like G Koop’s contributions to major hits by Migos, 2 Chainz, and Drake lead the list. You’ll also find some of G Koop’s work on FSQ’s “Reprise Tonight” (Soul Clap Records, 2020) included.

Meanwhile, FSQ curated our own playlist of G Koop’s production and writing contributions, titled “The Spirit of G Koop”. We know we need to reach out to G Koop and find out which most recent 2022 work he’s most proud of to include in the playlist, as our selections were made in 2020. To be honest, it’s hard to keep up with G Koop, he’s just so prolific. G Koop’s Twitter usually gives us an idea of what’s coming up or just released.

On this playlist we feature some of his contributions to the world of harder to find FSQ remixes, and his collaborations with Jake One, and work for Atmosphere, George Clinton & Parliament Funkadelic, Soul Clap, and Foreign Legion.

In 2020, we produced a 2 hour FSQ 📻 episode celebrating G Koop’s production and writing work across the music industry. The track list can be found here, and you can play back the episode below.

So how did we get here? Some Background:
Around about 2008, Chuck Da Fonk had come across the releases from Prozack Turner and his hip hop duo with Marc Stretch, known as Foreign Legion. Chuck then had reached out to Prozack to find out who had produced the Foreign Legion tracks, because they were so damn funky.

The answer turned out to be G Koop. Chuck found time to meet with Rob G Koop Mandell and there’s a whole lot more to the story to tell. We will fill in the blanks soon on this post but we wanted to get this up online to celebrate “G Koop Day”. In the meantime, celebrate “G Koop Day” and here are some photos of FSQ and G Koop in action.
